Afterward, rejoin the Onomea Trail and pass through the Botanical Garden grounds. Stick to the trail unless you’ve paid to enter, continuing toward Onomea Bay. The trail earned the nickname “The Donkey Trail” because it was originally used by donkeys carrying cargo from a harbor in Onomea Bay that no longer exists. At the northern end of Onomea Bay, there used to be a magnificent natural arch known as Onomea Arch. However, it collapsed during an earthquake in 1956.

Donkey Trail

Begin your journey on the Donkey Trail from the parking area by walking past the Na Ala Hele trailhead sign. The trail starts steeply, swiftly descending through thick rainforest. On your right (to the south) flows the Onomea stream. As you approach the bay along the Onomea trail, you’ll encounter a spur trail leading to stream access. It takes you over an embankment to a shallow area where the Onomea stream meets the ocean. Please be cautious here as the water may contain parasites like Leptospirosis and Giardia. Swimming with open wounds is not recommended, and drinking the water is unsafe. About 25 feet upstream, there’s a small waterfall. The Onomea Trail concludes at a beautiful spot overlooking Onomea Bay.
